Sixth Music Video Analysis

Linkin Park - Numb/Encore I choose to analyse Linkin Parks video numb/encore because it shows a smaller audience than the other videos that are analysed. Again the video is a live performance based video which reflects the type of music video I intend to create. Also the fact that the video is live, performance based made from real footage it creates an authentic feel for the audience due to the realism of the video. This can link to a reason why people would watch the video again.

The video focuses on a niche audience during the live performance as the audience at the gig is small in numbers. This is different from the other live performance based video's as the audience usually seen in their video's is large in numbers. This subverts the idea of, 'look how many people like us, we must be good', which in essence is a message that both the Mcfly and 30 Seconds to Mars, video's are subtly saying to the audience.

However the idea that Linkin Park and extremely well known band that they decided that using a massive audience isn't necessary and therefore concentrate on a small group of fans, as if saying 'these are true fans, become like these'.Therefore the video style for a bands music video can change depending on their popularity as different elements will work better due to the size of the audience.

The video is a one night performance that shows the bands collaboration with the rapper Jay-Z and shows what the band were doing before the gig throughout the video. The amount of footage that shows the band outside of the gig is about the same amount as showing them at the gig itself, this is unusual for a live performance based video as a large majority of the video is the bands performance itself.

The footage from outside the gig shows the 'light' moments of the band, showing them enjoying themselves and being average people. This is done so that the audience can feel the enjoyment that the band are having through the various shots and footage which then leads to repeatability as the audience would watch the video again due to their enjoyment.

By presenting the band as average people it lets the audience feel closer to the band and their music and therefore would watch the video again due to this 'connection'.

Due to the fact that the rock band, Linkin Park, are collaborating with rapper, Jay-Z, the genre of the music video instantly changes. The music is a mix of rock and rap which is unusual in various ways as two contrasting music genres are being played side by side. This instantly makes the video more interesting as the unusual mix of these two music genres work perfectly well together and therefore would let the audience watch the video again and again.

Due to the fact that the rock music genre is fused with the rap the pace of the video is much slower, again an unusual element of a live performance based video as the clips are usually fast and sudden.

The audience are again brought to feel more apart of the music video and the band due to the various shots of the audience themselves at the gig. The shots cleverly shows a diverse audience, through different genders, race and the way that the audience are dressed.

Fifth Music Video Analysis

30 Seconds to Mars - Closer to The Edge

I have chosen to analyse this video because it is also a performance based video, however it is different from Mcfly's video due to its filming and editing style and techniques, which slightly subverts the conventions of a stereotypical live, performance based video.

Throughout the video the audience notice's that the video is a lot more stylised for a live performance based music video, the key word being live. To begin with there are a lot of editing transitions used throughout the video, for example the use of fades which is unusual for a performance based video due to the amount of times that the fade transition is used.

In addition the fact that fades for this type of video are unusual makes it more interesting and can link with the idea of repeatability as the audience would want to watch the video again due to its unique use of editing.

Other forms of transitions that are used is the various times that text is used to overlap the video. This text is used for various reasons, one of these reasons is to promote the band which is also done through many ways. One way that the text enables this is the way that they state the amount of countries and cities that this single band went through, showing that they are 'amazing' to do so many gigs by themselves.

Another way that the text promote the band is the way they advertise the members of the band. placing montage of shots of the a band member at a time, linked with freeze frames of them as children and text that states their names.

There is also text used within the video that presents the band on a more personal level to the audience. An example of this is the text, 'This kid is amazing. And yes he is standing on the crowd'. This shows the band members own personal views which emphasises their passion for this video and for all their fans who have and are supporting.

Footage of the band that shows them not performing is another way that the video promotes the band on a personal level as the audience witnesses what they do in their time in between gigs. There is also footage of the band from all over the world which again links with promoting them as it shows that they are capable of performing with such energy across the world.

Showing footage from across the world is another way of the video attempting to make the audience feel involved in the video as the video targets as many places from across the world that they went to, attempting to not let anyone feel left out. Also the fact that the footage is made up from gigs across the world is different as most live performance based video's are made form a single night of footage.

Furthermore the text is also used to allow the audience to feel involved and a part of the video. An example of this is the text that says 'the believers' when the camera was focused on the audience, along with, 'and all 1363930 of you', when the video was being introduced. This is a way that the video attempts to make the audience feel involved within the video.

The clips of people who aren't apart of the band is another way that the video allows the audience to feel involved as these are everyday people speaking their own views. Also this is unusual for any music video which makes it interesting and again could be a reason for repeatability as the audience would want to watch the video again due to its unique attributes along with how they are brought to feel a part of the video.

The video follows many conventions of a typical rock music video such as the shaky camera used throughout, which is especially effective when the music becomes more 'upbeat', such as when the camera was focusing on the drums and drummer. This makes the video appear more interesting and therefore again offers repeatability as they would want to watch the video again.

All the footage within the video is captured from a variety of different angles, such as the various long shots, pans, whip pans and ariel shots, along with many more, that are used to film the audience and band as they perform. These shots show the audience screaming and jumping, mosh pits that have been formed, Jared climbing the stage and people in general just going 'crazy'. These shots show the gigs to be fun and energetic and can lead to repeatability as the audience would watch the video again due to the 'fun' feeling they obtain from the video. Also this promotes the band as it makes the audience want to go to one of the bands gigs.

The fact that the video is based mainly around live performance is makes the video style, 'authentic' and could be another reason why people would watch the video again due to isn't realism.

The realism and authenticity of the video would allows people to understand the experience that can come from going to one a '30 Seconds to Mars' gigs and will also lead to them not only watching it again, but wanting to go to one of their gigs.

Another aspect of the video that is interesting is the fact that the camera is focused mainly on Jared, the singer, throughout the video. This establishes that it is his band and his importance while at the same time could be a way of the promoting the band through Jared Leto. The video makes Jared 'appeal' to the audience through all the different shots they use, such as the close ups of his face, so that audience such as females would be more interested into watching the video again, which would therefore promote the song and the band.

Ideas Gained From Video

  • Ensure the camera shots used as interesting as possible, keep attention and repeatability.
  • Use elements that make the video unique.

Fourth Music Video Analysis

This video was chosen because it is a live, performance based, illustration video and is the style of video that i have chosen to do.

Analysis

The music video is very fast paced which is shown through the quick cuts and the short capture length of the each clip. Also the pace of the video relates with the music being played, the faster the music plays the faster the shots and the shorter the length of these shots, while vice versa for when the music slows down.

All these shots are done in various interesting ways, from shaky camera (used throughout and also gets more unsteady the more upbeat the music becomes).

The various shots used consists from high angled shots of the crowd, to low angled shots of the band members which could be done as a way to show that the band are the important thing within this video. This can also be seen as a point of view shot of the audience looking up to the band, which can lead to the idea that the directors may want the audience to feel as if they are actually in that audience with them.

This links with the idea of repeatability as the audience would watch it again to either reminiscence, using the video to re-experience the day, if they were there. Or allow others who weren't there to feel as if they were there. This could be seen as a marketing technique as by allowing audience who weren't at the gig to feel that they want to go then they would pay to go to the next event. This is furthermore emphasised by the use of the variety of different shots which enable the audience to see everything that was happening and therefore feel more a part of it.

There are also a lot of close ups throughout the video which have multiple affects. One of these is through the close ups of the instruments that are used, which introduces and emphasise to the audience what genre music they are listening to, in this case rock. Also the close up of the band members is a way to present and advertise the band to both the old and new fans as it lets them see who they are.

Furthermore this links with the idea of repeatability as the audience would watch this video again because of the band members themselves. The audience may think of the band as 'fit' and would watch the video again because of them due to the appeal.

This also links with another idea of repeatability as by the camera and the various shots used to show the band members and audience allows the viewers of the video to witness how they are enjoying themselves. The close ups of both the band members and audience faces emphasises how much they are enjoying themselves, which then leads to the viewers 'feeling' the atmosphere, again can be a way of marketing as it leaves people wanting to go a gain the full experience of the gig. The fact that the video is authentic and real can lead to the emphasis on the viewers 'will' to want to go and see the band live themselves.

Another way that the video is shown to be fun for the viewers is the use of various 'sweeping shots' of the audience which shows how active they are, along with showing various facial expressions at a time. This can also link with the pans and track shots of both the band members and audience as again this shows the viewer how energetic and active they are, for example when Dougie is running around with the camera, emphasising the idea of how much fun they are having.

In addition the video uses unusual shots from what are normally seen through a music video, an example of this is the extreme close up of the vocalists face from the camera on the mic. A shot from the mic itself is unusual for a music video and therefore the use of these unusual shots makes the video more interesting and therefore leads again to the idea of repeatability as the audience would want to watch it again.

Furthermore throughout the video there are shots of both male and females in the audience, this is a way to present the band as being liked by both genders. This could encourage more people from both genders to like the band as their view of the band may change, such as thinking that only girls like them which would deter both males and certain females from liking the band.

Another, not usually seen ,attribute about the video that can lead to people wanting to watch the it again is that the song is already famous at this current time and already at number one, which would lead to people already knowing the song and therefore are drawn to the video to see a different version of a good song. Also the way that this music video switches the genre of the music allows them to target not only people who know Rihanna's version of the song but also the audience who like rock genre music.

Ideas Gained From Video

  • Use fast paced shots to relate with the music
  • Use unusual shots to make it more interesting
  • Use as many different types of shots to allow the video to flow better
  • Handheld/Shaky camera for realism and authenticity
  • Allow it to appeal to both genders

Genre In Ancillary Task

How have you considered genre in creating your media text?
While creating my media text I researched into other media texts that linked with the same genre that i was intending to make, this being rock genre music. This enabled me to ensure that the product that i was making linked with the conventions of a typical rock genre digipak and magazine advert. The 'We Are The Ocean' album cover is an example of me researching into the rock genre media texts before creating my actual product, ensuring the knowledge used of the conventions of rock music.

What signifiers pinpoint the genre?
Example of signifiers in my digipak is the use of images such as the crows in the background of the front cover. Crows signify 'darkness' which shows the music genre as rock as this is the conventions of the music genre, being dark.

What kind of media producer would produce your kind of media text?
Hassle records and Roadrunner records are institutions that would produce my type of media text as this is the genre of music that both companies specialize in.

Does your media text show fluidity of genre or is it similar to older media texts of the same genre? If it is different, how?
My media text doesn't show fluidity of genre as album covers from 40 years ago resemble current album covers of the same rock genre such as 'Queen's' album cover 'News of the World'. These album covers use a surreal approach in order to portray the music genre just like the album cover that I analysed for 'We Are The Ocean'.
The only difference that can relate with genre in both album covers and magazine adverts is the way that the band members themselves are shown. For example the Queen album 'The Works' shows the band members of Queen dressed in an iconographic way that portrayed rock/metal music genre back in the 70s. But in these recent times people dress like that wont appeal much to the younger audience of rock music, only the older audience who knew about these bands from their time period.

Original Photos

This is the photo of the crow that was used in the background of the digipak front cover.
This photo is the photo used for the background throughout the digipaks and magazine adverts.

These are my original photos that were used in the production of the digipak and magazine advertisement. All these photos were taken on a white surface which made things easier when it came to the editing stage.

Magazine advert

This is my final magazine advert which shows the band members more clearly, establishing their identity thus allowing the audience to know them. I related the magazine advert with the album cover itself, keeping the house style the same as this is something many magazines such as Kerrang! do when they are advertising or reviewing an album.

Digipak

This is the final product for my digipak which i based around the two music albums that I analysed. I drew the creative, surreal look from both 'You Me At Six's' and 'We Are The Ocean's' album cover as they were both inspirational and creative. I placed the crows in the background as a way to signify that the music has a darker side to it due to crows being associated with 'darkness'/'evil'. This is similar to 'We Are The Oceans' album cover through the way it uses the night sky to portray the music's 'darker' side.

Second Magazine Advert Experiment

This is another experiment that i did to ensure that my final product looked suitable for not only being a magazine advert but also convey the music genre appropriately.

Magazine Advert Experiment

This is an experiment for my magazine advert which I based around the advertisement in one of Kerrang!'s magazines but after a survey I decided that this wasn't suitable.

Digipak Audience Feedback

This is the result of an audience questionnaire/feedback to see whether the audience understood the genre of the music I was trying to portray to them. After reading what each person placed and the reason to why they said this I decided that the digipak fufilled its purpose and therefore didn't need any further editing.

Album Cover Research

I did a survey to see what other people thought of the album covers that i analysed to use to base my own album cover from. I did this to show what views people who do and dont listen to indie/rock to see what genre they would believe the album covers to be.

Questionnaire

These are questionnaires that I did during the final stages of my ancillary task. I used these questionnaires to ensure that the what I wanted to conveyed was actually being shown, such as the genre.

Original Album Cover Idea

This is my original idea for my album cover but i decided to change it because the lighting and colours in the background were too light to represent the music genre in the way I intended to.

Mock Ups

This is my mock up for my Digipak which i kept mainly to the real thing but had to make a few changes in order for the final product to look better suited as a digipak.

This is the mock up for my media magazine which i based on my knowledge from AS media music magazine analysis.

Story Board

This is the story board that i made for my production piece. Due to the fact that my music video was all perfoemanced based this story board was just a rough idea of how the video will flow from beginning as placing specific details would have been difficult.

Shot List

Complete performance based video. These are a list of general shots that will be used for the filming of my music video. The list isn't specific because i intend to experiment with the shots used. Also due to the nature of the video style, being a live performance based, a planned shot list is difficult to produce.

Long shots of each band member – High and Low angled shots.

Long shots of all band members together – plain backgrounds.

Loads of shots of the band playing their instruments - long and mid shots and close-ups.

Many close ups of all members of the band.

Pictures of the instruments themselves.

Use of extreme close ups of faces to creating different perspective’s.

Duration of shots will be longer on the vocalist. - Fast, quick shots overall.

Magazine Advertisement Analysis

This magazine advertisement was analysed so that I could understand the relationship and concepts behind advertising a rock genre album in a rock magazine.

  • The entire house style of the magazine advert matches the album cover even though it is advertising a gig that they are doing. The reason for this is the gig that the band are doing relates with the music from this album and therefore the theme is kept similar.

  • The colours on both the album cover and magazine advertisement follow the generic conventions of this specific rock music genre.

  • Firstly the the orangery/red in the back creates the immediate idea of danger due to the connotations of the colour red and the 'fiery' look that the red and orange create together. This links with the immediate response the audience would read from the colour black, which as also danger as the thoughts of black is the unknown danger that hides within it.

  • The colour black also creates the idea of mystery due to its connotations of, 'what is in the dark'. This links with the way that the audience never know what to expect from rock as a whole genre due to its sub-genres and complexity.

The way that the red emerges from the darkness could represent many things, such as;

  1. When relating to the music genre could be the way that the music 'explodes' out of nowhere.

  2. Could represent the bands thoughts and desires towards this tour as the 'fiery' idea could portray there determination.

  • The colour and design of the magazine advertisement as a whole is interesting and unique which would immediately catch the audiences eye as this isn't something that they would usually watch.

  • The advertisement is limited in text, it goes straight to the point and tells the audience just the key features. This would appeal to all audience types, whether it be a reader just flicking through the magazine and notices the page instead of reading loads of text they can scan the important information and move on.

  • The mast head that shows the bands name is presented in a style unique to the band and their music genre, with the white running down the page looking like 'blood' which then represents the connotations of rock music.

  • The magazine advert has complex meanings which are presented in simplistic ways which appeal to any type of audience, such as both male and female, as there is nothing that limits the audience type.

Third Album Cover Analysis

This is another album cover for you me at six for their 'EP' of the song 'Liquid Confidence'. I chose to analyse this video as I find it very creative and would like to draw idea's from this album.

  • The album is filled with bright colours which can instantly grab the audiences attention. This could show how the band themselves want to grab the attention of people with their music.
  • The EP subverts the conventions of a normal rock genre album cover as the average cover usually has darker colours or colours such as 'Red' which connote danger, but instead this album cover is filled with vibrant more mellow meaning colours.
  • Also almost all rock genre album covers stick with the same house style and colour scheme, limiting its colours. While this EP has a diverse range of colours, which is one thing that i like about it.
  • The many colours in the EP could reflect the bands type of music, being an indie/rock genre due to the various vibrant colours with a lot happening on screen and within the music.
  • The collage of colours and images also reflects the music genre with how creative the music sounds and with the amount happening within the music. Also the surrealism of the EP cover also reflects the way rock genre music can be portrayed when images are used.
  • The simple, cream background allows the creative, colourful collage to stand out even more while adding to the creative scheme of the EP. Also by the background being cream rather than white shows that the music isn't plain/boring.

This album cover appeals to the audience in many ways such as:

  • The way the EP is presented through colour schemes and construction such as the diverse colours used and the collage of images shows the creativity of rock music which attracts the audience who like the rock/indie music genre.
  • The title 'YOU ME AT SIX' in capitals immediately tells the audience who the band is which will attract old fans but may also attract new/curious fans.
  • The target audience are probably young due to the vibrant and creative use of the images and colour which are more relevant to a young audience.

What interest me about the EP cover:

  • The colour scheme and collage of different images as it attracts my attention in the same way it would attract the target audience's attention.
  • The black and white bird grabs my interest as it is different than the rest of the album, lacking colour yet standing out so much. This could reflect the band as they are really well known in the rock industry but don't stand out as much in the real world.

Second Album Cover Analysis

I chose to analyse this album cover because it links with the type of album digipak that i intend to create. This album cover is the 2nd album from the band 'You me at six' which are a rock/indie genre based band and therefore this album cover is perfect for presenting the music genre of rock.

The variety of bright colours link with the genre of the music as the 'brightness' can relate to how the music stands out, and how loud it is. Also by having so much colours on the album cover reflects how rock music has so much going on within the music itself. Also this links with all rock genre music videos, no matter what type of rock it is, there is always a lot happening within the video. Furthermore the variety of colours can link with the fact that rock itself has a divers range of genres and many bands explore with each genre.

Points about the album:
  • The album is surreal, linking with the genre of rock music, which can be portrayed as anything you make it.
  • The plain white background allows the colours to stand out which both attracts more attention from the audience, allowing the band to stand out more.
  • Compared to the original album cover this newer album shows how the band themselves have matured due to the nature and creativity of the colours.
  • Unlike the older album this circle goes outwards, showing how the band and their music are now more 'out there' due to how well they are now known.
  • The use of so many colours shows that this alum isn't stereotyped and therefore can apply to any person. This being any gender and anyone who may be attracted to the creative side of rock music, which can be seen on the album.
  • This subverts many albums, both rock and other genres, by the way that the house style is applied. Usually an album sticks with the same house style, keeping to a limited use of colours. However this album use a wide range of colours therefore subverting the conventions of a typical rock album. However this can link with the idea of what rock is about, being unique and always going against what is thought to be 'normal'.
  • The album title 'take off your colours' is in a very small font which shows that the band know that they no longer have to advertise what the album is due to the fact that is a re-release. Instead they rely more on the use of imagery as a way to show that they have changed.
  • The colour scheme can also reflect that the band are young as the colours are vibrant, stand out and different. These are ways that young people are sometimes portrayed to be.

Above is the original album cover for 'Take off your colours' which is when the band wasn't that well know. This can be seen through the contrasting colours as it makes it hard for the album to stand out much, also the dull brown and black have the same effect. Furthermore it shows how the band them self were more 'in the shadow' at the time of the album release, not well known.

Also the album shows lack of experience due to how simple it looks, especially when compared to the remake.

However this album cover portrays rock music in the same way as the newer album cover:

  • The diverse colours represent what happens within music videos, the music of rock itself and the many sub genres of rock.
  • The album goes into 'darkness', getting darker and less clearer as the circle goes inwards, which again shows how the band are not well known, being in the shadows.
  • Furthermore the 'curled' font reflects the way the music on the album flows, being fluent. Also it shows the creativity behind the music of the genre rock.
  • This album uses lower cased letters, which can link with the idea that the band is new, young and inexperienced. While the newer album is all in capitals, showing that this band is more experienced than they used to. Also showing that they are more mature and thus sand out more than they once did, all messages that they convey to their audience.

Overall both album covers portray the same responses about rock music in very similar ways. However the reason why I chose to use both album covers is to show that album covers can also tell a story about the band themselves and not just a story about the music and its genre. Also the use of its colour scheme shows how creative and colourful rock music really is. Colourful in the sense of how people feel and relate to the music and also the way it is portrayed.

Hassle Records

http://www.hasslerecords.com/cms/

Hassle Records is the independent institution/record label that owns the band 'We Are The Ocean' along with many other bands in a similar genre such as 'Attack Attack'. All the bands owned by this company are smaller, not so well known bands rather than main stream bands that companies such as 'RoadRunners' would own. They are based in London but are all over the world enabling them to market the bands to their fullest. All the companies tracks, CDs, Downloads are distributed through PIAS recording company. The company also allows bands to send their demos to them and thus will decide whether or not to sign them up.

Almost all the bands owned by Hassle Records play music in the same genre of rock which involves 'screamo' within their music. Specialising in Rock, Punk and Emo genre music thus enabling them to know exactly who their target audience is and making marketing the bands much easier.

Second Music Video Analysis

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=na7dwYv0Y-I

This video is of a band called 'You Me At Six' performing their song 'If i were in your shoes'. I choose to use this video as it relates to the genre of the type of music video I intend to produce along with a lot of camera styles i find interesting. This video is purely a performance, illustration video in a denotation form as the video is just the band performing with no relation to the lyrics.

  • The video uses a lot of close ups of the instruments of the band, this immediately establishes the genre of the music which then immediately appeals to the audience as they know what the video's genre is and thus catches their interest. Also the close ups allow a quicker pace in the video which links with the speed and genre of the music.
  • The video is filled with loads of quick cuts and the duration of the camera shot length is also short which adds to the pace of the video and also portrays the genre.
  • The video uses a variety of different and interesting shots such as the way the shots cut and merge into one another. This links with the music genre due to the fast pace of the cuts but it also allows repeatability, making people want to watch the video again, due to how interesting and unique the video is. This is a convention that all rock genre music videos have as they try to make the video as interesting, unique and creative as possible.
  • The duration of shots are longer on the lead singer while quick shots on all the other band members. This shows that he is the more important member of the band. This can be seen in a variety of other rock music video's as the camera shows more focus on the lead vocalist than any other member.
  • The band were shown in a long shot which shows all five members in a interesting, star-like formation on a canted angle while the camera pans. This makes the video interesting and enables the audience to want to watch it more.
  • The background is a blank, white background while the band are dressed in dark clothing which makes the audience concentrate on the band which can help to place the face of the band members in the memory of new/old fans.
  • The band are dressed in casual clothing which creates a realistic feel to the video. This shows that the band are just average people which will attract a variety of other audiences who may be able to relate more with the band members. However these audiences would be mainly young as this is the type of audience who would relate more with the band because the band them self are young.
  • The band are good looking which will also attract a young audience, mainly female, and also allows repeatability as they would want to watch the video again due to the bands looks. This is emphasised via the many close ups of the band as the cameraman/director appears to want to make their looks explicit.
  • The close ups of the bands faces while they are performing also shows the bands facial expressions which shows that they are enjoying themselves, this makes the video more enjoyable for the audience and thus emphasise repeatability.
  • The atmosphere from the music and the band members in the video are energetic which attracts the attention of a young audience which also enables repeatability as it makes the audience enjoy the video. Also the energy from the video links with the music genre as when a band perform they tend to move around a lot, so this video presents them as if they were at a concert like a performance video does.
  • The band as a whole appeals to both male and female audiences as the female would be attracted to the male members of the band while the male audience can relate to the band members.
  • The entire video is filmed in handheld which makes the capture more rigid. This links with the genre of the music and what is happening on screen as the band are constantly on the move.

Still Image Analysis

This is the album cover for the band 'We Are the Ocean' where the song 'Nothing Good has Happened Yet' can be found.
  • The album cover is surreal which can link with the music genre as rock music can be seen as surreal as well.
  • The typography 'sways' like the waves of water, which can link with the bands name of 'Ocean'.
  • The lighthouse links with the idea of the CD cover having relevance to the ocean, as that is where a lighthouse is situated. Also the lighthouse is a phallic symbol which can relate to the fact that the band is all male.
  • The image of the woman resembles a sea creature such as a 'mermaid' or 'siren', which again relates with the idea of the band reflecting there name.
  • Also the woman, along with the starry background, creates the idea of a dream. This relates with the surreal idea and again reflects the music genre. Also the idea of a 'dream' could link with the band when they first released this album as being a successful band could be there dream.
  • The dream idea is supported by the use of balloons which float around, which creates emphasis on a dream as they 'drift'.
  • The fact that the album cover shows night time could also reflect the fact that the band aren't well known. Also the night relates with the idea of a 'dream' that the band may want to follow. Furthermore the use of night can relate to the darker side of the bands music due to the generic idea's of rock/screamo music being dark.

Relevance to audience:

  • The album cover is creative and surreal which links with the genre of the music and therefore would link with the mind that the audience as they enjoy creativity.
  • The use of a female on the front cover could appeal to a female audience telling them that the album is for them as well. Also the image could relate to a male audience as the female may be placed there to 'attract' them.
  • The colours of green and blue which are colours that follow the stereotype for males could also appeal to the male audience, showing that this album is for them.

Idea's gained from the cover:

  • I thought the album to be really creative due to the surrealism of the cover, this is something that I would like to try in my album cover.

Example Music Video Analysis

Link to music video chosen for inspiration - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XTn8Sdt1cxc

This music video is of a band called 'We Are The Ocean' and was chosen for my inspiration because of the conventions that it follows for a typical rock genre music video, the genre which i have chosen. The video is a performance, illustration video as throughout the entire video it is just the band performing. The video is completely a denotation video as the lyrics of the song don't relate to the video at all, except through the use of a ripple transition that resembles water.

The target audience for this video is young people who like forms of rock music.

Analysis of the video:

  • The video shows each band member performing throughout the video, allowing both the members and their instruments, which help state the musics genre, to be viewed. This creates authenticity as what the audience see happening is what is really happening when it was being filmed, just a live performance. This is how a typical rock genre music video is produced.

  • Use of a lot of close ups of the band members, showing that they themselves are the focus of the video. Another reason why there could be a lot of close ups of the band members face is to appeal to an audience who may be attracted to member/s of the band. This could enhance repeatability as people would watch the video again just to view the band members.

  • The band members importance is supported through the use of a completely empty space. The setting looks like a warehouse, which could relate to the music's genre of rock as the setting creates an 'underground' feel. Also the setting could relate to the lyrics of the music as the lyrics mention how someone won't let them go. So the empty warehouse could be a way of showing that they are trapped and alone (emphasised by the large empty space).

  • The setting in the video is changed at 2.16 minutes to a small enclosed, more urban area. This enclosed area can link with the lyrics saying 'just let me go', showing how the setting of the video relates slightly with the lyrics.

  • The ripple transition used can also resemble sound waves, this links with the fact that it is a music video.

  • The pace of the music video increases as the music builds up with the 'screaming', the camera shots become quicker and the camera's becomes less and less steady. This creates tension and interest to the audience due to the 'exciting' pace which gets the audience going.

  • Due to the simplicity and authenticity of the video it allows people to relate to the video and therefore willing to watch it more.
  • The entire video is film with a handheld camera which supports the videos music genre as the non-stop movement reflects the way rock music is portrayed, being fast and energetic. Also the energy that the band show in their video makes the video look enjoyable, this allows the audience to enjoy the video more which would make them want to watch it more.

Ideas Gained from video

  • Set my video in an area that relates with the music genre.
  • A complete performance video with small links with lyrics and video/setting.
  • Make sure the video's pace links with the pace of the music.
  • Maybe use transitions that link with the lyrics.
