Shot List
Complete performance based video. These are a list of general shots that will be used for the filming of my music video. The list isn't specific because i intend to experiment with the shots used. Also due to the nature of the video style, being a live performance based, a planned shot list is difficult to produce.
Long shots of each band member – High and Low angled shots.
Long shots of all band members together – plain backgrounds.
Loads of shots of the band playing their instruments - long and mid shots and close-ups.
Many close ups of all members of the band.
Pictures of the instruments themselves.
Use of extreme close ups of faces to creating different perspective’s.
Duration of shots will be longer on the vocalist. - Fast, quick shots overall.

Magazine Advertisement Analysis

- The entire house style of the magazine advert matches the album cover even though it is advertising a gig that they are doing. The reason for this is the gig that the band are doing relates with the music from this album and therefore the theme is kept similar.
- The colours on both the album cover and magazine advertisement follow the generic conventions of this specific rock music genre.
- Firstly the the orangery/red in the back creates the immediate idea of danger due to the connotations of the colour red and the 'fiery' look that the red and orange create together. This links with the immediate response the audience would read from the colour black, which as also danger as the thoughts of black is the unknown danger that hides within it.
- The colour black also creates the idea of mystery due to its connotations of, 'what is in the dark'. This links with the way that the audience never know what to expect from rock as a whole genre due to its sub-genres and complexity.
The way that the red emerges from the darkness could represent many things, such as;
- When relating to the music genre could be the way that the music 'explodes' out of nowhere.
- Could represent the bands thoughts and desires towards this tour as the 'fiery' idea could portray there determination.
- The colour and design of the magazine advertisement as a whole is interesting and unique which would immediately catch the audiences eye as this isn't something that they would usually watch.
- The advertisement is limited in text, it goes straight to the point and tells the audience just the key features. This would appeal to all audience types, whether it be a reader just flicking through the magazine and notices the page instead of reading loads of text they can scan the important information and move on.
- The mast head that shows the bands name is presented in a style unique to the band and their music genre, with the white running down the page looking like 'blood' which then represents the connotations of rock music.
- The magazine advert has complex meanings which are presented in simplistic ways which appeal to any type of audience, such as both male and female, as there is nothing that limits the audience type.

Third Album Cover Analysis

- The album is filled with bright colours which can instantly grab the audiences attention. This could show how the band themselves want to grab the attention of people with their music.
- The EP subverts the conventions of a normal rock genre album cover as the average cover usually has darker colours or colours such as 'Red' which connote danger, but instead this album cover is filled with vibrant more mellow meaning colours.
- Also almost all rock genre album covers stick with the same house style and colour scheme, limiting its colours. While this EP has a diverse range of colours, which is one thing that i like about it.
- The many colours in the EP could reflect the bands type of music, being an indie/rock genre due to the various vibrant colours with a lot happening on screen and within the music.
- The collage of colours and images also reflects the music genre with how creative the music sounds and with the amount happening within the music. Also the surrealism of the EP cover also reflects the way rock genre music can be portrayed when images are used.
- The simple, cream background allows the creative, colourful collage to stand out even more while adding to the creative scheme of the EP. Also by the background being cream rather than white shows that the music isn't plain/boring.
This album cover appeals to the audience in many ways such as:
- The way the EP is presented through colour schemes and construction such as the diverse colours used and the collage of images shows the creativity of rock music which attracts the audience who like the rock/indie music genre.
- The title 'YOU ME AT SIX' in capitals immediately tells the audience who the band is which will attract old fans but may also attract new/curious fans.
- The target audience are probably young due to the vibrant and creative use of the images and colour which are more relevant to a young audience.
What interest me about the EP cover:
- The colour scheme and collage of different images as it attracts my attention in the same way it would attract the target audience's attention.
- The black and white bird grabs my interest as it is different than the rest of the album, lacking colour yet standing out so much. This could reflect the band as they are really well known in the rock industry but don't stand out as much in the real world.

Second Album Cover Analysis

I chose to analyse this album cover because it links with the type of album digipak that i intend to create. This album cover is the 2nd album from the band 'You me at six' which are a rock/indie genre based band and therefore this album cover is perfect for presenting the music genre of rock.
The variety of bright colours link with the genre of the music as the 'brightness' can relate to how the music stands out, and how loud it is. Also by having so much colours on the album cover reflects how rock music has so much going on within the music itself. Also this links with all rock genre music videos, no matter what type of rock it is, there is always a lot happening within the video. Furthermore the variety of colours can link with the fact that rock itself has a divers range of genres and many bands explore with each genre.
Points about the album:
- The album is surreal, linking with the genre of rock music, which can be portrayed as anything you make it.
- The plain white background allows the colours to stand out which both attracts more attention from the audience, allowing the band to stand out more.
- Compared to the original album cover this newer album shows how the band themselves have matured due to the nature and creativity of the colours.
- Unlike the older album this circle goes outwards, showing how the band and their music are now more 'out there' due to how well they are now known.
- The use of so many colours shows that this alum isn't stereotyped and therefore can apply to any person. This being any gender and anyone who may be attracted to the creative side of rock music, which can be seen on the album.
- This subverts many albums, both rock and other genres, by the way that the house style is applied. Usually an album sticks with the same house style, keeping to a limited use of colours. However this album use a wide range of colours therefore subverting the conventions of a typical rock album. However this can link with the idea of what rock is about, being unique and always going against what is thought to be 'normal'.
- The album title 'take off your colours' is in a very small font which shows that the band know that they no longer have to advertise what the album is due to the fact that is a re-release. Instead they rely more on the use of imagery as a way to show that they have changed.
- The colour scheme can also reflect that the band are young as the colours are vibrant, stand out and different. These are ways that young people are sometimes portrayed to be.
Above is the original album cover for 'Take off your colours' which is when the band wasn't that well know. This can be seen through the contrasting colours as it makes it hard for the album to stand out much, also the dull brown and black have the same effect. Furthermore it shows how the band them self were more 'in the shadow' at the time of the album release, not well known.
Also the album shows lack of experience due to how simple it looks, especially when compared to the remake.
However this album cover portrays rock music in the same way as the newer album cover:
- The diverse colours represent what happens within music videos, the music of rock itself and the many sub genres of rock.
- The album goes into 'darkness', getting darker and less clearer as the circle goes inwards, which again shows how the band are not well known, being in the shadows.
- Furthermore the 'curled' font reflects the way the music on the album flows, being fluent. Also it shows the creativity behind the music of the genre rock.
- This album uses lower cased letters, which can link with the idea that the band is new, young and inexperienced. While the newer album is all in capitals, showing that this band is more experienced than they used to. Also showing that they are more mature and thus sand out more than they once did, all messages that they convey to their audience.
Overall both album covers portray the same responses about rock music in very similar ways. However the reason why I chose to use both album covers is to show that album covers can also tell a story about the band themselves and not just a story about the music and its genre. Also the use of its colour scheme shows how creative and colourful rock music really is. Colourful in the sense of how people feel and relate to the music and also the way it is portrayed.

Hassle Records
Hassle Records is the independent institution/record label that owns the band 'We Are The Ocean' along with many other bands in a similar genre such as 'Attack Attack'. All the bands owned by this company are smaller, not so well known bands rather than main stream bands that companies such as 'RoadRunners' would own. They are based in London but are all over the world enabling them to market the bands to their fullest. All the companies tracks, CDs, Downloads are distributed through PIAS recording company. The company also allows bands to send their demos to them and thus will decide whether or not to sign them up.
Almost all the bands owned by Hassle Records play music in the same genre of rock which involves 'screamo' within their music. Specialising in Rock, Punk and Emo genre music thus enabling them to know exactly who their target audience is and making marketing the bands much easier.

Second Music Video Analysis
This video is of a band called 'You Me At Six' performing their song 'If i were in your shoes'. I choose to use this video as it relates to the genre of the type of music video I intend to produce along with a lot of camera styles i find interesting. This video is purely a performance, illustration video in a denotation form as the video is just the band performing with no relation to the lyrics.
- The video uses a lot of close ups of the instruments of the band, this immediately establishes the genre of the music which then immediately appeals to the audience as they know what the video's genre is and thus catches their interest. Also the close ups allow a quicker pace in the video which links with the speed and genre of the music.
- The video is filled with loads of quick cuts and the duration of the camera shot length is also short which adds to the pace of the video and also portrays the genre.
- The video uses a variety of different and interesting shots such as the way the shots cut and merge into one another. This links with the music genre due to the fast pace of the cuts but it also allows repeatability, making people want to watch the video again, due to how interesting and unique the video is. This is a convention that all rock genre music videos have as they try to make the video as interesting, unique and creative as possible.
- The duration of shots are longer on the lead singer while quick shots on all the other band members. This shows that he is the more important member of the band. This can be seen in a variety of other rock music video's as the camera shows more focus on the lead vocalist than any other member.
- The band were shown in a long shot which shows all five members in a interesting, star-like formation on a canted angle while the camera pans. This makes the video interesting and enables the audience to want to watch it more.
- The background is a blank, white background while the band are dressed in dark clothing which makes the audience concentrate on the band which can help to place the face of the band members in the memory of new/old fans.
- The band are dressed in casual clothing which creates a realistic feel to the video. This shows that the band are just average people which will attract a variety of other audiences who may be able to relate more with the band members. However these audiences would be mainly young as this is the type of audience who would relate more with the band because the band them self are young.
- The band are good looking which will also attract a young audience, mainly female, and also allows repeatability as they would want to watch the video again due to the bands looks. This is emphasised via the many close ups of the band as the cameraman/director appears to want to make their looks explicit.
- The close ups of the bands faces while they are performing also shows the bands facial expressions which shows that they are enjoying themselves, this makes the video more enjoyable for the audience and thus emphasise repeatability.
- The atmosphere from the music and the band members in the video are energetic which attracts the attention of a young audience which also enables repeatability as it makes the audience enjoy the video. Also the energy from the video links with the music genre as when a band perform they tend to move around a lot, so this video presents them as if they were at a concert like a performance video does.
- The band as a whole appeals to both male and female audiences as the female would be attracted to the male members of the band while the male audience can relate to the band members.
- The entire video is filmed in handheld which makes the capture more rigid. This links with the genre of the music and what is happening on screen as the band are constantly on the move.
